Alejandro Bataller: Inside SHA Emirates, the World’s First Healthy-Living Island

We spoke with Alejandro Bataller, Managing Partner of SHA and AB Living Group, about the vision behind SHA Emirates as a new longevity ecosystem.

SHA Emirates is being described as an entire healthy-living destination. What will the island actually include?

What we are creating at SHA Emirates is an ecosystem where health is the foundation of daily life, not an afterthought. We are building a dedicated health resort, a world-class longevity resort, and private beachfront residences seamlessly integrated across the island. Rather than treating SHA Emirates as an isolated facility you visit once a year, the entire island acts as an extension of our integrative philosophy. The resort provides the sanctuary and immersive environment for intensive retreats, while the residences allow people to turn those principles into a permanent lifestyle. The public spaces, culinary offerings, and surrounding nature are all designed with passive health benefits in mind, meaning the longevity resort, and residential healthy living community function as one interconnected network.

When SHA Emirates opens, what will the guest experience look like from the initial health assessment onwards?

Similar to SHA Spain and SHA Mexico, the journey will begin before you even step foot on the property. Your first day will centre on rigorous, cutting-edge diagnostic testing. We look at your biology through advanced genomic testing, neurocognitive evaluations, and biomarker panels to establish your true biological age and current metabolic baseline. From there, a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, nutritionists, experts, and holistic therapists will sit down with you to craft a hyper-personalized program.

Which elements of the SHA Method developed in Spain will remain fundamental in the Emirates?

The foundational pillar of the SHA Method will remain untouched: our integrative approach combining scientific medicine with natural therapies and targeted anti-inflammatory nutrition. That balance between evidence-based science and holistic wellbeing is what brings tangibly measurable results. However, adaptation is vital. At SHA Emirates, we will also be tailoring our medical and nutritional protocols to address specific regional priorities, such as inflammation.

For SHA Residence owners, how deeply will health management be integrated into everyday life?

Living at SHA Residences will be about turning your home into a functional tool for optimal health. Residents will have priority, on-demand access to our clinical team and longevity resort. The Residences will feature circadian lighting systems, medical-grade air and water purification, soundproofing for deep sleep, and natural materials that lower stress. SHA Emirates will act as an active health partner in their daily life.

After years of searching, why did AlJurf feel like the right home for SHA Emirates?

When I first walked the land at SHA Emirates, I immediately felt a rare sense of stillness and grounding. Positioned between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, AlJurf offers accessibility alongside complete sanctuary. At SHA, we never view nature as just a backdrop or pleasant scenery; nature is a proven wellbeing intervention. Exposure to natural coastal landscapes and the quiet rhythm of the sea directly reduces cortisol levels, improves sleep quality, and restores cognitive function. The architecture at SHA Emirates will use passive design to capture sea breezes and natural light, ensuring that the surrounding environment will actively contribute to your physical and mental wellbeing.

Who do you imagine living at SHA Residences – people already engaged with longevity or a broader luxury residential audience?

Residents of SHA Emirates will be individuals who value time and vitality as their primary currency. On one side, these represent high-performance individuals, entrepreneurs, and global leaders who are already deeply invested in extending their health span. On the other hand, we have strong interest from families and high-net-worth buyers who may not be longevity experts, but who are seeking luxury with substance. They want a safe, quiet environment where their living space actively supports their family’s health, sleep, and long-term wellbeing. We are designing for anyone who views their home as an investment in how long and how well they live.

What is the current timeline for SHA Emirates?

Our development team and partners are working closely to bring this landmark destination to life, and we are targeting a 2028 opening. Building an entire healthy-living island requires extraordinary precision, especially when integrating medical technology directly into infrastructure, but we are progressing steadily.

With wearables, AI-driven diagnostics and new longevity protocols evolving rapidly, what feels like real progress – and what still makes you skeptical?

Indeed, there has been genuine progress since our 2008 opening, and especially in the last few years. Diagnostic tools like genomic mapping, biological-age testing, and AI-assisted health tracking allow us to move away from reactive sickness care toward preventative health. This is valuable. Where I feel sceptical is in the sheer noise of the wellness trend cycle, especially with the rise of wellbeing influencers. There are endless quick fixes, unverified supplements, and gimmicks being marketed as longevity cures without solid medical grounding. Longevity is not achieved through an isolated habit or trendy product; it requires a systematic, scientifically validated healthy living lifestyle framework. Technology should inform and help us in the process, but it can never replace fundamental health pillars like restorative sleep, anti-inflammatory nutrition, cellular repair, and emotional balance.

Has your own definition of health and wellbeing changed over time? And what does your own longevity protocol look like today?

When we started SHA almost twenty years ago, my focus was largely on educating about our method and messaging and helping people prevent imbalances and illness. Today, our message is about health span: maximizing the years of high energy, physical capability, and mental clarity. Balancing the company’s international expansion with a busy family life in Madrid means my own protocol must be practical and disciplined.

My non-negotiables start with sleep hygiene: keeping dark, cool, and quiet sleeping environments to ensure deep recovery. I follow a clean, plant-forward diet aligned with the SHA Method, avoiding processed foods and refined sugars. Movement is daily, combining functional strength training with outdoor activity. Mentally, I practice brief meditation to manage my stress levels. Finally, I run comprehensive diagnostic check-ups at SHA twice a year to look at my internal metrics and adjust my routine based on clear data.

Looking beyond SHA, where do you think global wellness is heading over the next decade?

We are entering a decisive decade for longevity science. Biological age testing, epigenetic analysis, advanced inflammatory markers, immune profiling, mitochondrial assessment, microbiome mapping and continuous metabolic monitoring allow us to move from subjective wellness to health optimization.

The second major shift is regenerative medicine. Stem cell applications, exosome-based therapies and targeted cellular repair strategies represent a new frontier in supporting the body’s intrinsic regenerative capacity.

However, these interventions must be evidence-led, clinically supervised, and deeply personalized to the individual’s biological profile.

Perhaps the most transformative development is predictive modeling through digital twins. By integrating genomics, biomarker data, lifestyle inputs, and therapeutic responses, we can simulate long-term trajectories, anticipate risks before clinical manifestation, and continuously optimize interventions in real time.

This marks the transition from reactive healthcare to predictive precision medicine. The convergence of advanced diagnostics, regenerative medicine,  artificial intelligence and digital twin modeling will redefine how longevity is measured and modulated. It allows us to design fully personalized, data-driven health pathways with unprecedented accuracy.

Longevity is no longer about approximation. It is about precision. And precision is what establishes the irreplaceable foundation of lasting health.
