What to Expect From Art Dubai’s New Format This May

The Middle East's most influential art fair returns in May with a leaner format, free doors and a first-of-its-kind deal that ties gallery fees to actual sales.

The Art Dubai contemporary art fair, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, has announced the details of its special anniversary 2026 edition. The event will take place from 15 to 17 May at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai; the VIP preview is scheduled for 14 May.

Twenty years together with the city

Art Dubai is more than a fair. Over two decades it has shaped the cultural identity of the region, supported galleries and artists, and built bridges between the Middle East and the rest of the world. The anniversary edition is conceived as a reflection of that journey: a compact yet rich programme in which contemporary, modernist and digital art coexist.

In the words of Art Dubai Group Executive Director Benedetta Ghione, the current format is testimony not only to the resilience of the UAE’s cultural scene but also to the power of partnership: “Art Dubai’s story is Dubai’s story. Producing this edition was only possible here, in a city with which we have grown together.”

Programme and participants

The special edition will feature more than 75 exhibitors, including commercial galleries, institutional participants and partners. Of these, over 45 are gallery presentations, with around 60% representing regional players. In total, galleries from nearly 20 countries are taking part.

Notably, the organisers are introducing a risk-sharing model for the first time: gallery participation costs will be tied to their commercial success at the fair. This step is a direct response to the challenges the art market is facing around the world today.

The parallel programme includes:

Made Forward – a major presentation from the Dubai Collection, the city’s first institutional collection of modern and contemporary art.

The Global Art Forum in its 20th edition – the flagship intellectual forum, curated this year by Shumon Basar.

An exhibition of modern Arab art from the Barjeel Art Foundation collection.

A performance-led programme in collaboration with the Sharjah Art Foundation.

Large-scale installations and site-specific works by artists including Khalid Al Banna, Hashel Al Lamki, Rami Farook, Kevork Mourad and others.

Yaw Owusu, Heart of a Place, 2022, UAE fils, US pennies, Ghana pesewas.

A video art programme in collaboration with Alserkal Avenue.

Collaborations with Art Jameel, National Pavilion UAE – La Biennale di Venezia, the Ministry of Culture and House of Arts.

Cultural hub

Fair Director Dunja Gottweis noted that the presence of galleries from nearly 20 countries alongside such strong regional representation is the best proof that Dubai has secured a firm position as the region’s commercial art hub. “Galleries are showing ambitious, considered work, reflecting both the depth of the region and its connections across a wider set of cultural contexts,” she said.

Art Dubai 2026 is not a routine anniversary event, but a carefully calibrated statement about what the fair was, is, and intends to remain: an open platform where artists, gallerists, collectors and audiences meet as equals.
